PIAZZA UMBERTO I
HISTORICAL NOTES AND DESCRIPTION
An obligatory passage for the visit to the fascinating village of Vitorchiano is Piazzale Umberto I. The large and airy square is the border between the new city and the old village. This is overlooked by a series of monuments that underline this interaction of spaces between the past and the present, between the ancient and the modern. In the center of the square, the public fountain stands out, built between the 17th and 18th centuries. In the background of the scenography of the square, the medieval walls with the towers of the fourteenth century, the Porta Romana of the fourteenth century and the bell tower of the church of the Trinity or of Sant’Amanzio. On the left of Porta Romana, leaning against the outer walls of the city, is the Monument to the fallen of the Second World War. On the opposite side of the square is the former church of San Giovanni Battista from the 16th century, now used as a meeting place for various cultural and sporting events, which closes the wings towards the new city and the Orte – Viterbo highway.
