HOUSE OF THE RABBY
HISTORICAL NOTES AND DESCRIPTION
Today used as a private residence, the building was probably born with this connotation. The valuable and high-quality architectural features of the aristocratic architecture of the 13th – 14th centuries also frame the Rabbi’s house as one of the most characteristic monuments of the village of Vitorchiano. It is precisely the residence in the house of a rabbi in the distant Renaissance period, which gave rise to the name of the Rabbi’s house in modern times. In Via Ugolini, 28, at the height of Via delle Cordonate, the house is built on a staircase. Beyond the staircase you enter a small terrace made entirely of peperino, consisting of large blocks of stone and supported by three simple buttresses. A modern metal railing delimits the entire staircase on the left and protects the two sides of the balcony. On the right of the balcony you can see the entrance to the house preceded by peperino jambs with architrave engraved with a medallion with the Eucharistic symbol, characterized by the radiant sun with the cross in the center flanked by symbols of alpha and omega. Along Via delle Cordonate, the north facade of the building continues, characterized by mighty peperino pillars, decorated at the top with fluted cornices, which support the terrace through two arches and two buttresses placed on each pillar. Other small pillars higher up support the peperino balcony. At the height of the first arch, a stone bench and a window located at the level of the floor are visible. The documentary research and above all the correspondence of the Vitorchiano notaries will hopefully lead in the near future to be able to outline the historical events of the development of the entire building.
